CORE: Emotional Learning

At EEPS, we believe wellbeing and learning are deeply connected

CORE: Social and Emotional Learning

At Eltham East Primary School, Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is embedded in our culture and daily practice. We believe wellbeing and learning are deeply connected, and students thrive when they feel safe, valued and supported.

Our structured SEL program, known as CORE, anchors relationships, behaviour and wellbeing across the school.

The EEPS CORE includes five key domains:

  • Personal Learning

  • Social Learning

  • Emotional Learning

  • Body Safety Education

  • Positive Coping

Together, these domains support students to develop self-awareness, emotional regulation, respectful relationships, resilience and a strong sense of belonging.

How CORE is Delivered

CORE lessons are explicitly taught and timetabled across all year levels. Teachers use evidence-informed resources including The Resilience Project and Respectful Relationships to support the development of key social and emotional capabilities. CORE provides a shared language and consistent expectations across the school.

Through CORE, students explicitly learn and practise skills such as:

  • Cooperation and teamwork

  • Managing conflict respectfully

  • Building and maintaining friendships

  • Recognising and managing emotions

  • Developing coping strategies and resilience

Our programs are tailored to the needs of our school community and are built on safe, respectful relationships that foster inclusion and belonging. We prioritise high-quality SEL instruction and invest in building staff capacity to ensure consistent practice across the school.

Partnerships and Support

At EEPS, Social and Emotional Learning extends beyond the classroom and is strengthened through strong partnerships with families and the wider community.

  • Strong partnerships with parents, carers and families

  • Support for students experiencing mental health challenges

  • eSmart awareness and cyber safety education

  • A whole-school approach to respectful relationships

The EEPS CORE aligns with our school values of being Respectful, Responsible and Resilient and is grounded in our foundations of being a Safe, Inclusive and Aspirational school.

Through CORE, we aim to equip every student with the skills, confidence and character to flourish - both at school and beyond.
